Background

Sri Vadeendra Teertharu's Masterpiece, Guru Guna Stavana: How Sri Raghavendra Swamy Himself Acknowledged it is described in Mantralaya (2103).

Meaning

Within the sacred traditions of Indian hagiography, the lives of great saints are often adorned with extraordinary manifestations that affirm the authenticity of their devotion and the divine origin of their spiritual works. Such events are never regarded merely as supernatural occurrences or miracles meant to inspire wonder. Rather, they are understood as sacred moments in which the invisible spiritual world briefly reveals itself within the visible realm, allowing devotees to witness the living relationship between the Guru, the disciple and the Supreme Lord.

Among the innumerable sacred episodes preserved in the glorious history of the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha, few possess the spiritual grandeur and devotional significance of the divine acceptance of the Sri Gurugunastavana, the immortal hymn composed by Sri VadeendraTeertharu in praise of his beloved Guru, Sri Raghavendra Gurusarvabhauma.

The life of Sri Vadeendra Teertharu was a continuous offering at the sacred lotus feet of his eternal Guru, Sri Raghavendra Gurusarvabhaumaru. Every breath he drew was dedicated to the service of Sri Rayaru, and every thought that arose in his heart was filled with profound gratitude for the boundless compassion and immeasurable grace of his revered Guru.

Deep within his heart, Sri Vadeendra Teertharu cherished but one sacred aspiration that generations yet unborn, through the illuminating light of sacred literature, might behold the infinite glory of Sri Raghavendra Teertharu. He longed for the world to recognize Sri Rayaru's unparalleled scholarship, His flawless exposition of the Vedas, Upanishads, and Shastras, His countless scriptural masterpieces, His limitless compassion toward all beings, and His eternal mission of establishing, preserving, and propagating the flawless Siddhanta of Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya.

Yet Sri Vadeendra Teertharu knew that the greatness of Sri Raghavendra Teertharu could never be confined within the limits of human language. Even so, impelled by boundless devotion to his Guru, he resolved to write, to the best of his ability, the eternal and inexhaustible virtues of Sri Rayaru. From this sacred resolve was born the immortal hymn Sri Guru Guna Stavanam a garland of devotion lovingly woven by an ideal disciple and reverentially offered at the lotus feet of his eternal Guru

The Gurugunastavana was not conceived merely through poetic inspiration or scholarly ambition. It was born out of an ocean of Guru Bhakti. By the boundless grace of Sri Hari, Sri Vayu, the Guru Parampara and above all Sri Raghavendra Swamy, a sublime thought arose in the heart of Sri Vadeendra Teertharu. He resolved to describe, as far as human language could permit, the immeasurable greatness, compassion, scholarship and divine glory of his revered Guru. That sacred inspiration blossomed into what would become one of the greatest devotional compositions in the entire Dvaita tradition.

With profound humility and unwavering devotion, Sri Vadeendra Teertharu composed the magnificent Gurugunastavana, a masterpiece consisting of thirty-six exquisitely crafted verses in the majestic Sragdhara Chandas. Sragdhara Chandas is one of the most majestic and elaborate metres in Sanskrit poetry Among classical Sanskrit metres, Sragdhara is regarded as one of the most refined and demanding. Composing flawlessly in this metre requires exceptional mastery of:

- Sanskrit grammar,
- prosody (Chandas Shastra),
- poetic ornamentation (Alankara Shastra),
- vocabulary and
- rhythmic precision.

Every verse of Gurugunastavana was woven with extraordinary poetic elegance, profound philosophical insight and above all, overflowing devotion to Sri Raghavendra Swamy. This was far more than a literary achievement. It was the outpouring of a disciple whose heart had become completely absorbed in the contemplation of his Guru.

For Sri Vadeendra Teertharu, the Gurugunastavana was not a work to be displayed before scholars, nor was it composed to establish his poetic brilliance. Every verse was an offering at the lotus feet of his Guru RaghavendraTeertharu. It arose from deep Bhakti, immeasurable gratitude (Kritajnata), and complete surrender (Sharanagati). Having received the grace of Sri Raghavendra Swamy throughout his life, Vadeendrau desired only one thing that his Guru RaghavendraTeertharu would graciously accept this humble offering of love.

By the infinite grace of Sri Raghavendra Swamy, Sri Vadeendra Teertharu completed the composition Gurugunastavana. When this incomparable hymn was completed, Sri VadeendraTeertharu felt that it could not be offered before any mortal assembly. It belonged only at the lotus feet of the very Guru Sri RaghavendraTeertharu whose infinite virtues it sought to praise.

With this sacred conviction, accompanied by the revered retinue of the Matha, Vadeendru undertook the holy pilgrimage to Mantralaya, the divinely sanctified abode where Sri Rayaru eternally showers His grace upon devotees.

The holy Kshetra was resplendent with spiritual splendour. Pilgrims from distant lands had gathered to seek the blessings of the ever-compassionate Guru. Learned Pandits were engaged in profound scriptural deliberations. Young students sat at the feet of their Acharyas, drinking the nectar of sacred knowledge. The resonant chanting of the Vedas filled the air, mingling with the fragrance of flowers, incense and sacred Tulasi. Every corner of the holy precinct radiated serenity, devotion, and divine presence.

Upon arriving at the sacred Brindavana, Sri VadeendraTeertharu first worshiped Sri Moola Rama Devaru, Prana Devaru and Manchalemma with profound reverence. Thereafter, with folded hands and deep humility, VadeendraTeertharu offered Hastodaka to Sri Rayaru and performed a splendid Maha Mangalarati, his heart overflowing with Guru Bhakti.

Standing before the Moola Brindavana of Sri Raghavendra Swamy, VadeendraTeertharu was not merely a Pontiff paying homage to His predecessor. He stood as a humble disciple before His eternal Guru, who had guided every step of His spiritual journey.

With folded hands and eyes filled with devotion, Sri Vadeendra Teertharu addressed Sri Rayaru with profound humility. Vadeendraru prayed, "O Gururaya! By Your infinite grace alone I have been able to complete this humble work describing Your incomparable greatness. Nothing in it belongs to me. Every word has arisen only through Your blessings. I now place this Gurugunastavana at Your sacred feet. Kindly accept this insignificant offering from Your servant."

Having uttered these words, he reverentially placed the Gurugunastavana before the sacred Moola Brindavana.

The sanctified atmosphere of Mantralaya became charged with an indescribable spiritual intensity. Drawn by the solemnity of the occasion, scholars, ascetics, disciples, devotees and pilgrims gathered around the Brindavana in profound silence. Every eye remained fixed upon Sri Vadeendra Teertharu as he stood immersed in devotion before his beloved Guru. The entire assembly sensed that they were witnessing not merely the offering of a literary work, but the complete surrender of a disciple's heart.

Then, with a voice softened by devotion and a heart overflowing with gratitude, Sri VadeendraTeertharu began to recite his newly composed Sri Guru Guna Stavanam.

Each verse flowed like a sacred offering placed gently at the lotus feet of Sri Gururaja. Every word carried the fragrance of devotion.Every syllable resounded with reverence.Every verse became a radiant lamp illuminating the infinite glory of Sri RaghavendraTeertharu.

The assembled Pandits, ascetics, scholars, students and devotees listened in profound silence. As the sacred hymn unfolded, hearts melted in devotion. It seemed as though the very atmosphere of Mantralaya had become charged with the living presence of the Guru, and every listener experienced the bliss of Guru Mahima flowing like a celestial river.

Gradually, Sri Vadeendra Teertharuru reached the concluding verse beginning with:

"Vyasenutpata Bija..." (ವ್ಯಾಸೇನುತ್ಪಾತ ಬೀಜ...)

Then came the immortal proclamation:

"...Adya Sri Raghavendrad Vilasati Phalito Madhwa Siddhanta Sakhi."

(ಅದ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರಾದ್ ವಿಲಸತಿ ಫಲಿತೋ ಮಧ್ವಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ ಶಾಖೀ)

"Today, through Sri Raghavendra, the glorious tree of Madhwa Siddhanta has flourished, blossomed and borne abundant fruit."

As these sacred words fell from Vadeendrau’s lips, an indescribable divine mystery unfolded.

By the infinite grace of Sri Raghavendra Swamy, Sri VadeendraTeertharu was blessed with the direct vision of his eternal Guru Sri Raghavendra Swamy inside the Brindavana. From within the sacred Brindavana, Sri Rayaru revealed Himself in His divine form, radiant with heavenly brilliance, boundless compassion and serene majesty. Looking lovingly upon His devoted disciple, RaghavendraTeerthru sitting inside the Brindavana gently nodded His head in approval, graciously accepting the humble offering of Sri Guru Guna Stavanam.

Such immeasurable grace was bestowed upon Sri Vadeendra Teertharu alone. Vadeendraru alone was blessed with the direct vision of Sri Raghavendra Gurusarvabhaumaru, who manifested from within the sacred Brindavana, revealing His divine presence to His most devoted disciple and graciously accepting his heartfelt offering.

The devotees gathered around the Brindavana, however, witnessed another miracle that filled every heart with wonder and devotion.

At that very instant when Sri RaghavendraTeerthru nodded his head gently in approval of graciously accepting the humble offering of Sri Guru Guna Stavanam, the sacred Moola Brindavana itself trembled gently and visibly inclined, as though the eternal Guru Raghavendra Swamy residing within had personally acknowledged the loving offering of His beloved disciple. A profound stillness descended upon the assembly. Though they were not granted the divine vision revealed to Sri Vadeendra Teertharu, the movement of the Brindavana proclaimed unmistakably that Sri Raghavendra Swamy Himself had accepted the Sri Guru Guna Stavanam offered at His lotus feet.

Then, as if to remove even the slightest trace of uncertainty, another wondrous blessing followed.

The fragrant flowers and sacred garlands adorning the Brindavana gently loosened and descended upon Sri VadeendraTeertharu like a celestial shower, adorning the devoted disciple with the visible grace of the eternal Guru.

A wave of divine ecstasy swept through the gathering.

Eyes overflowed with tears.

Hands instinctively folded in reverence.

Hearts blossomed with indescribable joy.

The holy precincts of Mantralaya resounded with jubilant cries:

"Rajadhiraja Gurusarvabhouma Govinda! Govinda!"

"Jaya Jaya Sri Vadeendra Gururaja!"

The sacred air vibrated with the victorious praises of the eternal Guru Raghavendra and His supremely blessed disciple.

Sri VadeendraTeertharu himself could no longer contain the flood of divine emotion that overwhelmed his heart. Tears of supreme bliss streamed unceasingly from his eyes. Realizing that the Gurusarvabhouma had personally accepted his humble offering, Sri VadeendraTeertharu stood immersed in an ocean of gratitude beyond the reach of words.

Like a child finding refuge in the boundless love of a compassionate father, Sri VadeendraTeertharu embraced the sacred Brindavana with reverence and affection, weeping in bliss at the lotus feet of the Guru whose compassion knows neither limit nor end.

After regaining composure, Sri VadeendraTeertharu offered full Sashtanga Pranama, formally dedicated Sri Guru Guna Stavanam at the lotus feet of Sri RaghavendraTeertharu and concluded the sacred occasion with a magnificent Mangalarati.

Those assembled on that blessed day realized they had witnessed far more than an extraordinary miracle. They had beheld the eternal truth proclaimed before their very eyes, that Sri Gurusarvabhouma Sri RaghavendraTeertharu forever resides within His sacred Brindavana, ever-awake, ever-compassionate, ever-responsive to the sincere devotion of those who seek refuge at His lotus feet.

From that sacred day onward, Sri Guru Guna Stavanam came to be revered as one of the priceless jewels of the Guru Parampara. Sanctified by Sri Rayaru's own divine acceptance, it attained a uniquely exalted place among the treasured compositions of the Madhwa tradition and has continued to inspire generations of scholars, devotees and seekers through reverent recitation, study and discourse.

Soon after entering the sacred Brindavana in His physical body, Sri RaghavendraTeertharu revealed His first miracle by completing Sri Appannacharya's Guru Stotra with the immortal words, "Saksi Hayasyotkathi." Thereafter, countless divine manifestations of His boundless grace became known throughout the world.

Yet among those innumerable miracles, the divine acceptance of Sri Guru Guna Stavanam occupies a uniquely sacred and exalted place. By granting Sri VadeendraTeertharu the direct vision of His radiant form, by causing His sacred Brindavana to acknowledge the offering before the assembled devotees and by showering His beloved disciple with flowers from the Brindavana itself, Sri Raghavendra Swamy proclaimed for all generations that pure Guru Bhakti is never overlooked, never forgotten, and never left unanswered.

Even today, this sacred episode stands as an eternal testimony to the living presence of Sri RaghavendraTeertha Gurusarvabhouma. Rayaru is not merely remembered within His Brindavana, Rayaru eternally resides there, bestowing His boundless grace upon all who approach Him with unwavering faith, profound humility, and wholehearted devotion.

On that unforgettable day in Mantralaya, Sri Vadeendra Teertharu did not merely offer a composition. He offered his heart.

And Sri Raghavendra Swamy did not merely acknowledge a literary work.

He accepted the love, surrender and devotion of His beloved disciple.

Thus, the Gurugunastavana stands immortal not only as one of the greatest devotional compositions ever produced within the Dvaita tradition but also as an eternal testimony to the living presence of Sri Raghavendra Swamy, His boundless compassion, His acceptance of sincere devotion and His unfailing blessings upon all who seek refuge at His lotus feet.

Its message continues to inspire devotees across generations with unshakable hope and unwavering faith..

The devotion towards Sri Raghavendrateertharu is the ultimate truth and is the most simple and effective way to reach Sri Hari - "NAMBI KETTAVARILLAVO EE GURUGALA"! “Those who have complete faith in this Guru will never be disappointed.”
