Meaning
In
Mantralaya (2010), we explored the Bhojana Rasa Vibhaga Sandhi from a
spiritual perspective. Now, let us re-examine the same profound
composition through the lens of modern science. To do justice to the
depth and brilliance of the Harikathamrutasara, especially the Bhojana
Rasa Vibhaga Sandhi, this exploration will be presented in multiple
parts. The aim is to present Sri Jagannatha Dasaru's insights in a way
that aligns with contemporary scientific understanding, enabling the
present generation to appreciate the remarkable depth of Vedic
knowledge embedded in this timeless work.
One of the most
profound observations made by Sri Jagannatha Dasaru in the Bhojana Rasa
Vibhaga Sandhi is deceptively simple, the individual consciously
performs none of the essential functions that sustain life. What
appears at first to be a devotional reflection on eating gradually

an incomprehensibly intricate network of coordinated processes
operating entirely beyond conscious awareness.

Modern
biology has transformed our understanding of the human body. Rather
than viewing it as a collection of independent organs performing
isolated tasks, science now understands it as a highly integrated,
dynamic and self-regulating system composed of trillions of interacting
cells. Every organ, tissue, cell and molecule participates in an
immense network of communication through electrical impulses, chemical
messengers, mechanical signals and genetic regulation. At every moment,
countless physiological processes occur simultaneously with
extraordinary precision, maintaining the internal conditions necessary
for life despite continuous changes in the external environment. This
remarkable stability, known as homeostasis, is one of the foundational
principles of modern physiology.
Homeostasis involves far more
than maintaining body temperature or blood pressure. Every second, the
body continuously monitors and regulates hundreds of physiological
variables within remarkably narrow limits. Body temperature remains
close to 37°C despite environmental fluctuations. Blood glucose is
tightly controlled to supply the brain while preventing tissue damage.
Blood pH is maintained between approximately 7.35 and 7.45, as even
slight deviations can impair enzyme function and threaten survival.
Oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, electrolyte balance, blood volume,
blood pressure, hormones, nutrients and countless signalling molecules
are all regulated through interconnected feedback systems. None of
these processes require conscious attention. Indeed, if they depended
upon deliberate human effort, survival would be impossible.
The
autonomic nervous system illustrates this principle with remarkable
clarity. Unlike the voluntary nervous system, which enables conscious
movement, the autonomic nervous system functions continuously without
conscious instruction. It regulates heart rate, blood pressure,
respiration, digestion, pupil size, body temperature, glandular
secretion and countless other physiological functions. Within moments,
it adjusts cardiovascular activity during exercise, redistributes blood
flow according to metabolic demand, regulates perspiration and
coordinates digestion after meals. Every moment of life depends upon
this silent regulatory system, yet most people remain entirely unaware
of its existence.
Even this extraordinary system represents only
one layer of biological regulation. The endocrine system simultaneously
coordinates metabolism, growth, reproduction, immunity, stress
responses and tissue repair through hormones secreted by glands
throughout the body. Hormones such as insulin, glucagon, cortisol,
thyroid hormones and growth hormone act at concentrations measured in
parts per trillion, yet exert profound physiological effects through
intricate feedback loops that continually adjust according to the
body's changing needs. The conscious mind neither initiates nor
supervises these processes.
At the cellular level, the
complexity becomes even more astonishing. The human body contains
approximately 37 trillion cells, each functioning as an extraordinarily
sophisticated living system. Every cell continually exchanges
information with neighbouring cells and distant organs through
thousands of molecular signalling pathways. Receptors detect hormones,
neurotransmitters, growth factors and cytokines, activating
intracellular communication networks that regulate gene expression,
metabolism, cell division, repair and specialized functions. Every
second, innumerable molecular interactions occur within every cell,
allowing the body to respond continuously to both internal and external
conditions.
Modern molecular biology has further revealed that
the human genome is not a static repository of information but a
dynamically regulated system. Although nearly every cell contains the
same DNA, different genes are activated or suppressed according to the
needs of each tissue. This allows liver cells, neurons, heart muscle
cells and immune cells to perform vastly different functions despite
possessing nearly identical genetic material. Thousands of genes are
continually switched on and off in response to developmental signals,
nutrients, circadian rhythms, hormones and environmental influences.
These processes occur without conscious awareness, yet govern growth,
repair, adaptation, and survival throughout life.
Equally
remarkable are the mechanisms preserving the integrity of the genome.
Every day, each human cell experiences thousands of spontaneous DNA
lesions arising from metabolism, oxidative stress and environmental
influences. Highly sophisticated DNA repair systems continuously
identify and correct this damage with extraordinary accuracy,
preserving genomic stability across trillions of cells without
conscious participation.
Proteins, the molecular machinery
responsible for virtually every biological process, likewise require
continuous maintenance. Newly synthesized proteins must fold into
precise three-dimensional structures before becoming functional.
Molecular chaperones assist this process, while damaged proteins are
removed through elaborate quality-control systems such as the
ubiquitin-proteasome pathway and autophagy. Without these mechanisms,
defective proteins would accumulate, impair cellular function and
contribute to disease.
Perhaps no organ better illustrates
biological complexity than the human brain. Although it represents only
about two percent of body weight, it consumes approximately twenty
percent of the body's resting energy. Its approximately eighty-six
billion neurons communicate through hundreds of trillions of synapses,
supporting perception, memory, language, reasoning, emotion and
movement. Yet the neural circuits responsible for respiration,
cardiovascular regulation, body temperature, sleep and countless
reflexes function automatically throughout life. Modern neuroscience
increasingly shows that many neural processes underlying perception and

that conscious thought represents only a small fraction of the brain's
total activity.
Sleep provides perhaps the clearest
demonstration of human dependence upon unconscious physiological
regulation. During sleep, the brain remains highly active,
consolidating memories, recalibrating neural circuits, removing
metabolic waste through the glymphatic system, promoting tissue repair,
strengthening immunity, regulating metabolism and synchronizing
endocrine rhythms. Meanwhile, the cardiovascular system, kidneys,
liver, lungs and every other vital organ continue functioning without
interruption or conscious supervision.
Recent advances in
systems biology have further transformed our understanding by revealing
that health emerges from continuous communication among genes,
proteins, cells, tissues, organs, hormones, the nervous system, the
immune system and even the intestinal microbiome. Every physiological
system interacts with numerous others through vast interconnected
feedback networks.
This integrated view reveals that the body is
not governed by a single controlling centre but by innumerable
interacting regulatory systems. Every heartbeat, every breath and every
movement depends upon extraordinary biological coordination extending
across multiple physiological systems. The deeper science investigates
living organisms, the more evident this complexity and interdependence
become.

every breath, every cellular repair, every neural impulse and every
moment of existence remind us that life is sustained through processes
operating entirely beyond our conscious control.
Science
describes these mechanisms with increasing precision, revealing how
they function according to the laws governing living systems. Sri
Jagannatha Dasaru directs our attention beyond the mechanisms to their
ultimate sustainer. From the perspective of the Bhojana Rasa Vibhaga
Sandhi, the harmonious coordination observed throughout biology is not
merely the consequence of impersonal physical laws but the continuous
expression of Sri Hari's sovereign governance. Thus, every scientific
discovery that uncovers greater biological complexity also deepens the
devotee's appreciation of the Sandhi's timeless teaching, the
individual is never truly independent. Every moment of life, from the
first breath to the last heartbeat, rests entirely upon the
uninterrupted grace, wisdom and sustaining power of the Supreme Lord.
